National Coffee Day Is Our Kind of Holiday

National Coffee Day Is Our Kind of Holiday

There are a lot of invented holidays I can't defend. This is not one of them.

September 29 is National Coffee Day, and I will happily observe any occasion that formalizes something I was going to do anyway. But I have a slightly better reason than most people to mark it, which is that there is caffeine in my cup and caffeine in my eye cream — and on most mornings, only one of them has taken effect by the time I leave the bathroom.

The Order of Operations

Coffee first. I'm not going to pretend otherwise, and anyone who tells you they do their skincare before their first cup is either lying or has a level of discipline I've never met.

But the order after that matters more than people think, and it takes about four minutes.

Amniotic Toner goes on first, on clean dry skin, swept out from the center of the face with a cotton pad. Lactic and Glycolic Acids with a PHA, so it lifts the dull surface layer without the stripped, tight feeling. Its real job at this hour is preparation — it's what makes everything after it land properly. In its consumer panel, 100% agreed skin was immediately smoother upon use.

No. 1 Serum next, one to two pumps, face and neck and down onto the chest. THD Vitamin C for tone and dark spots, four molecular weights of Hyaluronic Acid for hydration that actually sits at depth. This is the product doing the long work; you won't see it today, you'll see it in eight weeks.

And then the one that pays off immediately.

The Coffee in the Eye Cream

MUTHA Up All Night Eye Cream, 15ml tube

Up All Night contains Coffee Seed Extract, and it is not there for the story.

Caffeine is why this one works on the appearance of puffiness and tired-looking dark circles. It's the same molecule you're drinking, doing a different job, on the thinnest skin on your face.

Underneath it, Pearl Powder delivers the instant part — a brightening, radiant finish on contact — and a light beige tint neutralizes darkness the moment it goes on. That's why I describe it as part skincare, part makeup. On a no-makeup day it works as a sheer hydrating concealer on its own. On a real day it goes under concealer and makes the concealer look better.

The numbers, from a 30-person consumer panel: immediately upon application, 93.4% agreed it brightened the under-eye area and 90% agreed it improved the appearance of tired eyes. With continued use at four weeks, 75% agreed it helped reduce the appearance of puffiness, and 72.4% agreed it helped reduce the appearance of dark circles. And 93.3% said they'd recommend it to a friend, which is the number I actually care about.

It won Marie Claire's Prix d'Excellence de la Beauté, but the review I think about is the customer who called it "my emergency eye cream — late night, early morning, puffy eyes… it fixes all of it."

Four Minutes, Two Kinds of Caffeine

That's the whole holiday routine. Toner, serum, eye cream — and the coffee, which I will have finished somewhere around the eye cream step.

What I like about it is the honesty of the split. The serum is the investment; it's working on a timeline measured in weeks and it asks you to trust it. The eye cream is the one that makes you look like you slept, this morning, in the ninety seconds before you walk out the door. You need both. Most mornings you're grateful for the second one.

So: pour the good stuff, take the four minutes, and let something else be caffeinated on your behalf for once.

One small note for anyone already thinking ahead — Up All Night is the product I end up buying several of every autumn, because it's the one friend who tries it immediately asks where it came from. Gifting season opens this week. Consider this your advance warning.

Happy National Coffee Day. Drink the second cup.
