Trust lies beneath its ashes

CONVERSATIONS

Chorus
Conversations, like Monday's rain. Conversations, without refrain.
"Conversations, so glad you came"
Conversations, it's the number one game.

Conversations about the love we lost.
Conversations, about the one we tossed.
Conversations? I know they mean a lot.
Conversations? I like those spicy plots.

Don't know why I feel this way, acting stranger every day.
Don't know who I am no more, hope you don't mind if I pour?

"Some conversation? I thought you'd never ask,
Conversation, come on and fill my glass.
Conversation you did WHAT in your past?
(I really thought she had more class)."

Chorus

Conversations are knocking on my door.
Conversations, it's been a Monday downpour.
"Conversation? I'll put the coffee on,
Conversation Oh this won't take long."

Rip them up and down each side, or beat yourself up, just don't hide.

"I love this part, when sparks they fly
And everybody wails and starts to cry."

Conversations, "I like the spicy parts"
Conversations? It's the 90's art.
Conversations, What's that name?
Conversations, It's the number one game.

"I think I hear that inner child,
I hope this one stays awhile.
I love it when they feel like this,
Pouring rain instead of mist."

Chorus

NEVER BEFORE

Never before
Have I sat in silence.
Never before
Lost for words.
Never before
Have I seen such beauty,
That I would only corrupt
Giving rhyme or verse.
Never before
Have I seen my reflection
Of an image I've held
So deep in my heart.
Never before
Did I need not to question,
But knew it completely
And need not impart.
Never before
Have I felt no emotion.
But sadness - forlorn
For this fool that I am.
Never before
Have I wanted so madly,
To have what I know
I will never
Or can.

HOW CAN I

How can I
With steady pen,
Write a poem
I must defend?
For truth it is
I must descend,
To where the Soul
Cannot pretend.
And if I told
How lovely thee,
Whose beauty is
As autumn's leaf,
And how more oft
I gaze, as thief,
For fear to cause her
Any grief.

In dreams, bold,
The lass does keep.
In thoughts of one
Who only weeps,
Like ancient winds
Cursed not to sleep,
That know too well
The deadly reef.
And like the wave
That comes to rise,
And fills the child
With such surprise,
I see it in her
Irish eyes,
That touch this heart
With worldly ties -

So how can I
With steady pen
Write a poem
I must defend?
I trust this poem
Will not offend,
For knows my heart
She is a friend ~

I'M JUST A MAN

I'm just a man, what more can I say?
I'm just a man, as I was yesterday.
I'm just a man, honest it's true,
And if you think I'm more, I'll disappoint you.

I sat and listened to the Irish band,
And felt their pride, and could understand,
As they sang and played a song that had roots,
With strings, one drum and a small silver flute.

It's hard to say no when you're in the same boat,
And it starts to rain, and you're offered a coat.
Like the night Mrs. Murphy, Mrs. Murphy came round,
And now we're both the talk of the town.

My intentions were pure, I assure you of that.
It's just I forget, like a ball does the bat.
I'm just a man, what more can I say?
I'm just a man, as I am to this day.

And they sang and they played a song that had roots,
With strings, one drum and a small silver flute.
I'm just a man, honest it's true,
And if you think I'm more, I'll disappoint you.

Now the three they played to an empty house,
Just a few at the bar, and of course myself.
But you'd swear it was full the way they played,
Giving all, with nothing to save.

And I felt a tear, as it fell over cheek,
For the song that they sung, was of one I could speak.
When I say that I won't, I find that I do,
And feel I am weak and the shame of it too.

But I'm just a man, what more can I say?
I'm just a man, as I was yesterday.
I'm just a man, honest it's true,
And if you think I'm more, I'll disappoint you.

LOVE TO DIE FOR

Now there were two
That came to settle in Ireland,
The very first two
To feel the shame.

For these two that came
To settle in Ireland,
Did so for love
The first with a flame.

Now this Love is the kind
Filled with passion,
Oh jealous and wild!
Like a northerly wind.

But it's Love the kind
That you would die for,
And it's in the blood
Of every Irishman.

So no matter how far
Their children have traveled,
Or how many seas
Since had to be crossed.

The flame is as strong
As the candle inside them,
For it burns with a Love
That can never be lost.

And those stars you see
On a clear dark night,
You know the ones
With the flickering light?

You can rest assured
It is someone from Ireland
Letting one know
That flames still as bright.

'Cause this Love is the kind
Filled with passion.
Oh jealous and wild!
Like a northerly wind.

But it's Love the kind
That you would die for,
And it's in the blood
Of every Irishman.

GOOD TO SEE YOU AGAIN

It sure was good to see you again.
I am really glad you spoke to me,
And we could still be friends.
I wanted to reach out to you,
And hold you in my arms,
But I knew that part was over,
So I settled for your palms.
It sure was good to see you again.
It was good just to be with you,
And not try to pretend.
And that time that stood between us,
I know has reached an end,
And I'm glad we both
Can wave and smile,
Both knowing where we've been.
It sure was good to see you again.

So glad I met you, understand?
So glad we felt the wind,
And rode the waves first hand.
And I know I'll miss you
When I'm gone,
So I thought I'd let you know it
In this song.

For all its tribulations,
For all its many doubts,
I'm glad we shared this memory,
And had this chance to shout.
And our echoes will be heard,
Our feelings one and all,
For everything we did,
Is riding in this ball.

So glad I met you, understand?
So glad I felt the kiss,
And touched it all first hand.
And no matter if I end up
On some distant star,
My heart will always know its place
And not be very far.

So glad I met you, understand?
It sure was good to see you again.

BE PROUD OF WHO YOU ARE

Be proud of who you are
You're very beautiful.
You're lips are full
As are your eyes.

Your skin is smooth
Its texture pure.
Like honey
From the forest flower.

Be proud of who you are.
Your gentleness - that
Intermittent breeze
Through August grass.

Be proud of who you are
Your heart reflects
Like a moon with lake
When day is past.

Be proud of who you are
This Spirit weeps
So well it knows,
Of whom it speaks.

Be proud of who you are
You're very beautiful.
Your lips are full
As are your eyes.

Be proud of who you are!

SLIPPED AWAY

Like a moon beam over water,
When the sky turns brightly lit.
Slips away into yesterday
When daylight falls on it.

Like a shadow that stretches
As far out as it can,
Disappears with the evening sun,
Though its body still will stand.

Slip away slip away
Leave no tracks to find.
Slip away slip away
Slip away from time.
Cast away cast away
Cast away the line.
Slip away slip away
And leave what's left behind.

A blue bird came and sang to me,
That was yesterday,
And what it sang was a love song,
Before it slipped away.
Slipped away slipped away
Slipped away so free,
Slipped away slipped away
Slipped away from me.

FREEDOM TO LIVE

I was taking a look, just the other day,
Seeing myself, in some honest way.
Like falling in love, I was always afraid,
So I found myself just running away.
But now that I know, nothing will last,
And I have to let go of everything from the past.
Facing the world, just as I am,
Sharing this love, wherever I can,
With freedom to love, there's freedom to live.
And to love as I am, is all I can give,
With freedom to love, there's freedom to live.
Yes, I'm ready for love, as uncertain days,
Ready for change, and uncharted ways.
Discovering you, uncovering me,
For what I have found, is that I am free.
So love me or leave me, even though I might shatter,
This love that I've found, is really what matters,
With more freedom to love, there's more freedom to live,
And to love as I am, is all I can give,
With freedom to love, there's freedom to live.

SIX WEEKS TILL SPRING

Walking on pavement, heavy sound of feet,
Looking at my shadow, stretched across the street.
Smoke from a chimney billows in the air,
Sky extra blue, everything is clear.
Today there was a funeral, Mr. Drew had died,
Forty odd grandchildren and others took the ride.
Passed me on the road, going up the hill
I was heading down, face against the chill.

Dry leaves rattled, clinging to their branch,
Made me want to stop, do a little dance.
Six weeks till spring, you'd hardly guess it so,
Six weeks till spring, with today fifteen below.
Been thinking 'bout this lady I'd like to get to know,
Six weeks till spring with a fresh new coat of snow.

Walked to the junction to have myself a fix,
Coffee conversation, a place to get my kicks.
Turned down a ride, decided to walk home.
It's only three miles, and eyes can freely roam.
Looked at my shadow, my backpack set in place,
Moved right along enjoying the quick pace.

Struggled with each breath, air seeming thin,
Thought about pollution, and the need of oxygen.
Headed up the hill, passed by the Drew's,
Children playing outside, the funeral was through.
Stopped for a moment, watched them pile up snow,
Thought about a lifetime each still had to go.

Six weeks till spring, you'd hardly guess it so,
Six weeks till spring and today fifteen below.
Been thinking 'bout this lady I'd like to get to know,
Six weeks till spring, and them rivers overflow.

DO WHADDY DO

When your life seems to be in trouble
And your head keeps spinning around.
When you feel like you're inside a bubble
But it won't lift off the ground.

You can color your shadow with pastels
Be like the radiant sun.
Jang with the jingle of sleigh bells
And walk like you're having some fun.

Chorus
You've got to pick up the beat
In your rhythm
Add just a measure or two
You've got to pick up the beat
In your rhythm
And Do Whaddy Do Whaddy Do.

Now try to make yourself slicker
Put a smile on that
Flows through your eyes
Flash them and make the lights flicker
Like those summer evening fire flies.

Chorus

Now look like you're
Someone that's special
Don't you know who you are?
Just take a good look in the mirror
'Cause you're a perfect five-pointed star.

Chorus

FRIDAY NIGHT IS OUR NIGHT

I missed you last week,
So I held back with our song.
I wondered where you were,
Wondered what went wrong.
I know it must be lonely,
Staying home all alone,
I know because I feel the same
Without this microphone.
But, when I see you out there
Sitting in your favorite seat,
I feel like I'm the one
That you come here
Just to meet.
And it's you that I sing for,
You and I we have this date.
And I always start to worry
Whenever you are late.
So honey let me sing for you,
Let me sing our favorite song,
"Cause Friday night is
Our one night
That we wait for all week long.
I know it must be lonely,
Staying home all alone,
I know because I feel the same,
Without this microphone.

I'D RATHER BE A THORN

I'd rather be a thorn, than a petal on a rose,
And closer to the ground, near the root, from which it grows.
I'm not looking for no praise, not looking for no show,
I'd rather be a thorn, near the heart, to which it goes.
No one has the answer, never heard a one,
No one else can change this life, that's cooked and overdone.
People only let you down, when climbing for the top,
But when you're near the bottom, you're closer to each drop.
I'd rather be a thorn, than a petal on a rose,
I'd rather be a thorn, near the heart, to which it goes.
I'm not looking for no praise, I'm not looking for no show,
I'd just rather be a thorn, near the root, from which it grows.

THOUGHTS REPRIEVE

Said "I'm a lover with no one to love"
Then saw the moon through chocolate trees.
The light it poured from south above,
Full of honey near clouds it teased.
Their fingers stretched through an open sky
That was full of sequined piercing eyes.
Its palm had bands of woven floss,
Like sand when wet and rippled across.
The car I drove frantically lunged,
Taking the bumps with spring that comes.
It must have known my urgent need,
As we headed for clearing at breakneck speeds.
My heart filled and overflowed,
Like a tree tapped for sugar it holds.
Arriving home I stood teary eyed,
As a lover just satisfied.
Later my strength began to retrieve
And I wrote this poem for my thoughts reprieve.

IT HAPPENED OVER
WONTON SOUP

It happened over wonton soup
On a Tuesday afternoon.

You told me of your secret fear
And right then I just knew.

A feeling came on over me,
Halfway through our meal.

I think I saw inside your soul,
And what I saw was real.

It happened over wonton soup
On a Tuesday afternoon.

Everything went natural,
Unexpectedly.

Almost like some other force,
Thought it time to be.

That's when they say it happens
When you least expect it to.

It happened over wonton soup
On a Tuesday afternoon.

I found myself later,
Feeling rather light.

And your image kept appearing
As it did throughout the night.

This morning when I woke,
My thoughts played with this tune.

It happened over wonton soup
On a Tuesday afternoon.

CAN YOU GIVE ME
THAT LOVE

You've got what I want,
I've got what you need.
So don't hold back,
Let's do it please.
This is for us why pretend,
You've got what I want
There I've said it again.

I felt the steam, felt the spark,
Saw your shadow inviting dark.
Our paths have crossed before in time,
Your soul it spoke, it spoke to mine.
We saw it in each other's eyes,
The moment we met both recognized.
We met before so why pretend,
You've got what I want,
There I've said it again.

Can you give me that love
I'm looking for?
Can you can you?
Can you give me that love
I never found before?
Can you can you?
Can you give me that love
I'll know for sure
Can you can you?
Can you give me that love
That has no cure?

Can you give me that love,
Can you give me that love,
Can you give me that love,
Can you give me that love?

Can you give me that love
That's really pure?
Can you give me that love
I never found before?
Can you? Can you?

POTHOLES

Don't know where I'm driving, but here I go again.
I'm a sucker for the potholes that I keep falling in.
I haven't met someone like you
Since I can't remember when,
And I'm a sucker for the potholes that I keep falling in.

Potholes and prairie dogs, and little old country toads.
You've gotta stay alert son, keep your eyes on the road.

Today feels like yesterday and love is on my mind.
Oh my daddy once had told me, Son you never look behind,
'Cause every time you do, you're gonna drive like you're blind,
You've got to pay attention, son, and watch for every sign.

Like potholes and prairie dogs, and little old country toads,
You've gotta stay alert son, keep your eyes on the road.
But I guess I never listened to what my daddy said,
'Cause today feels like yesterday, and you're on my mind instead.

Potholes and prairie dogs, and little old country toads.
You've gotta stay alert son, keep your eyes on the road.
Potholes and prairie dogs, and little old country toads,
You've gotta stay alert son, keep your eyes on the road.

THE SPIN

Handsome young men give her a spin, that's all you need to start.
Just a spin and a breeze begins when it turns on the light in her heart.
Oh buildings will sway and children will play
And the moon will smile from above.
And the sun and the stars and the crickets on Mars
Will all feel this breeze from her love.
Handsome young men give her a spin, even if half a reel.
Handsome young men give her a spin for that breeze that we all can feel.
Just a spin a wonderful spin, that's all you need to start.
Just a spin and a breeze begins, when it turns on the light in her heart.

FEELING FREE

It's snowing outside
Cold as can be,
But I've got a wood stove
Next to me.

The fire is hot
The wood is dry,
While outside snow
Is piling high.

I've got a wood stove next to me
I've got a wood stove next to me.

Not gonna go out
Not even try,
Gonna stay inside
Watch sparks fly.

Can see them when
The wood I stoke,
Coming from the chimney
In the smoke.

I've got a wood stove next to me
I've got a wood stove next to me.

Sparks are flying
Feeling free,
Feeling free,
Feeling free.
Sparks are flying feeling free,
I've got a wood stove next to me!

WALKING TALL

I guess I'll die a dreamer after all,
Looking at the cards that came to fall.
But I'd rather have my dreams
Than none at all,
Feeling like somebody walking tall.

Dreaming I said dreaming.
Let tomorrow have the fame
Today I'm feeling
This dreamer's life it's not so bad,
Looking back at what I had.
Feeling like somebody after all,
Feeling like somebody walking tall.

Dreaming I said dreaming
Let tomorrow have the fame,
Today I'm feeling.
'Cause no matter what tomorrow brings,
Today I know what I'm feeling,
And it's a feeling that I always can recall,
Feeling like somebody walking tall.

Feeling like somebody,
I know that I'm somebody,
'Cause my dreams they keep me always
Walking Tall.

LET ME KNOW

In the middle of a dream
Where nothing is real
But the feel.
You know what I mean?
It's on the big screen.
Every night it plays.
Tune in...What do you THINK?
Isn't it rather mixed UP!
All that stuff, like stepping
On bubble gum with your brand new
Finely crafted leather JC Penny
Shoes on...Isn't it.
Who said, pleasant dreams, happy dreams...sweet dreams?
They're more like echoes that bounce off
A distant star...or maybe from
A TV star!
Come closer...now listen.
THOUGHTS DON'T STOP
No matter what THEY say.
Better just get used to it
Because...no one loves YOU anyway.
Even when you're DEAD.
Did I just say THAT word,
DA DA DEAD. THAT land, you know
Like uh Hershey kisses so neatly wrapped in foil
That says GUARANTEED to retain the same
Sweet taste for ever and ever and ever...and ever.
I really don't think so,
But what do I know about sweet familiar tastes?
My neighbors know, THEY know everything!
So maybe you can just ask THEM.
But if you do, remember this...
Is there such a thing as a Hershey KISS...

Let me know.

FULL CIRCLE

I'm not looking for commitment,
I'm not looking for no strife,
I'm just looking for a good time,
If and when the time is right.

I need to have my freedom
I need my time alone
Don't need to feel the pressure
Just freedom from the known.

Like the moon that comes full circle
And never is the same
So too with hearts that meet again
They too will always change.

The other night was good
And loving you was right
But now it's time to let it go
And keep our feelings light.
In the meantime let's be friends
No reason not to be
Let's move along with the tide
That changes in the sea.

Like the moon that comes full circle
And never is the same
So too with hearts that meet again
They too will always change.

I need to have my freedom,
I need my time alone,
Don't need to feel the pressure,
Just freedom from the known.

TO BE TOUCHED

If you want to be touched
Take down that wall.
If you want to be hugged
Please hear this call.
If you want to be kissed
Let is just fall.
If you want to be loved
Then give it all.

It only takes a moment or two
To look in the eyes
Of the one next to you.
And if you're inclined
Give them a wink,
And if they blink back
What do you think?

When eyes are flashing
They send out their charm.
They tell the other
There's really no harm.
And if it's received
Without no alarm,
You just might end up
In each other's arms.

When you're feeling lonely,
Wanting human ties,
Let your light come out
Shining through your eyes.

OLDER THAN YOU

I am older than you
Let me take you by the hand.
Let me take you to the peaks
The highest that I can.

Let me show you where the berries are,
Where the hawks all have their home.
Let me take you to the highest peaks,
The peaks you haven't known.

Let's fly away from the lowly place
to the place where the west winds are,
Let's fly away towards happiness
That waits between moon and star.

I am older than you let me take you there
Let me give you the wings to fly.
I am older than you let me take you there
Where the howl of the wind meets the sky.

There is a place called Passing,
It's not at the top of L.A.
There is a place called Passing,
Not found in the U.S.A.
There is a place called Passing
A crossing like firing clay.
There is a place called Passing
That's found by those true to the way.

I am older than you
Let me take you by the hand.
Let me take you to that place
That your heart will understand.
Let me take you to the highest peak
Between the moon and sky,
Let me take you to the highest peak
So I can watch you fly.

BUT, I LOVE YOU STILL

There's just no reason
I should love you.
My life is like a dream
that's full.
I have the perfect situation,
and nothing is wrong.
But I, love you still.

My life is a life
others envy.
And until we met
I believed it so.
The smiles were true,
as the love I felt.
Just because I always
thought I knew.

Now anxious moments,
fill this body sleeping.
And this love I feel,
falls through my eyes.
I never thought you'd leave
this body weeping.
For I never thought love
could fly so high.

But I know now why Kings
have left Kingdoms.
And Queens everything
they own.
I know this because
I've climbed the same hill.
And because I know that I,
love you still.

BETWEEN THE PUMPKIN
AND THE STRAW

Between the pumpkin and the straw,
the Mona Lisa smile.
Between the flower and the wood,
that light through time that stood.
Between the table and the chairs,
the secret of that stare.
Between the smoke color fades,
all its many shades.
Between the ceiling and the floor,
seasons of encores.
Between the poet and the poem,
that look that finds a home,
Between the pumpkin and the straw.

ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES

When I look at you I see,
endless possibilities.
And I see them all
starting here right now.

Endless possibilities,
endless possibilities.
Those kind that go beyond
the furthest stars.

I know, love is the means,
and, sharing, in each other's dreams,
That lift the spirit,
high above the ground.

Endless possibilities,
endless possibilities.
Just waiting there,
waiting to be found.

Endless possibilities,
endless possibilities.
Those kind that go beyond
the furthest stars.

Endless possibilities,
endless possibilities.
Waiting just because,
just because of who we are.

SO WOULD I

If the moon had wings
It would leave the sky,
To come here below
To be by your side,
So would I.

If trees could walk
I know that they would.
To be closer to you,
That is, if they could.
So would I.

And if rivers and streams
Backwards could flow,
The ocean would follow,
Letting you know.
So would I.

And if birds could talk
In our own tongue.
They would say to you
That you are the one.
So, I try.

And our sun and stars
And planets above
Would shape into hearts
Beating with love,
And IF could change
As truly SHOULD,
To what can be
Instead of could,
You would fly,
And so would I.

KENTUCKY

There's a little country place
With a little pretty face in Kentucky.
She's a dream that I know,
In her eyes she let it show,
In Kentucky.

Chorus
It's a sweeter memory,
And the real thing
Seems it's always there,
Never tiring.
'Cause love is in the dream
For what is right,
And holding on to images
Now and then that come in sight,
And there's one of Kentucky
Tonight.

Tobacco barns, Daddy's stew,
Good ole boys, I met a few.
I was lucky, My car broke down,
But then I found
A Friendly place, a country town
In Kentucky.

Chorus

There's a little country place
With a little pretty face in Kentucky.
She's a star that I know,
In her eyes she let it show,
In Kentucky.

So now I have this image
I am holding on to tight
'Cause love is in the dream
For what is right,
And there's one of Kentucky
Tonight.

AN INSPIRATION

You are an inspiration,
A poem for the pen.
You are an inspiration,
The song in the wind.

You are that inspiration,
That moves words to flow.
You are that inspiration,
The poem that says it's so.

Look at you, standing there,
Your light fills the room.
Look at you, without care,
That is, without it's gloom.

You are that inspiration,
The rose that opens wide.
You are that inspiration,
You stand side by side.

You are that inspiration,
The poem that comes to life,
You are that inspiration,
For such poems, a poet writes.

WHEN YOU CAN'T SEE THE STARS

When you can't see the stars,
When lights are on too bright,
You can look in your heart,
For one that's close in sight.

And if there's noise to block the ear,
Of the wind you'd like to hear,
Then listen for the breeze,
Inside, that's always near.

And if you can't taste freshness,
Like that of early spring.
Taste its essence on the tongue,
It's there remembering.

And if the smell of the flower,
Seems too far away,
Close your eyes and take deep breath,
It's scent is there to stay.

Because it doesn't matter where you are,
In cities or in woods,
These things are always never far,
If only understood.
When you can't see the stars.

DO WE REALLY HAVE TO KNOW?

Do we really have to know
Where birds go when they die?

Do we really have to know
How the birds get to fly?

Do we really have to know
Every little thing
Between you and I?

Do we really have to know
Where love goes when
It says goodbye?

Do we really have to know
Why some fish swim upstream?

Do we really have to know
What they do?
If you know what I mean.

Do we really have to know
Every little thing?
Or can we let it go
Like an offering?
Do we really have to know?
Do we really have to know?

Do we really have to know
Why the moon circles the sky?

Do we really have to know
How those tears come to cry?

Do we really have to know
How it all began?
Like those things
We can never understand.
Do we really have to know?
Do we really have to know?
Do we really have to know?
